Power Plant Park

“George, you’ve got to be kidding me.”  Jake said, shaking his head as he read the large metallic sign, “There’s no way we should go in this place.”

“Come on, I really want to know what all the hype is about for the school paper.”  George replied excitedly.  “Imagine the front page: DEADLY AMUSEMENT PARK CLAIMS ENDLESS AMOUNT OF LIVES!”

Jake rolled his eyes, “First off, there’s no way its true.  Second, if it is, I don’t want to find out.”  He knew it was all a rumor, but the park still made him nervous.  

“Welcome to Power Plant Park.”  The man at the gate said, no enthusiasm at all in his tone, “Five dollars per person and be sure to…”

George thrust ten dollars at the man before he could finish and walked through the gate.  

“…read the rules of the park…”

Jake was about to glance at the sign the man indicated when George grabbed his arm and dragged him inside.  

It was the strangest park he had ever seen.  The walkway was made out of metal instead of pavement.  There was bare wire as fences, which Jake assumed must not be live.  The rides weren’t your typical ones either.  There were only a few, and most appeared to be elaborate roller coasters.  

“What shall we investigate first?”  George asked, his eyes wide as he looked around them.  

Before Jake could answer, another voice did.  

“This side of the park looks like its more fun.”  Kaley came up behind them and suggested.  She was pointing down the path to the left of them.  

Her other hand was grasped in the hand of Harry, her boyfriend.  He didn’t really talk much.  Jake assumed it was because he couldn’t get a word in with Kaley.  

“Doesn’t matter to me, I want to check everything out.  Which way do you want to go?”  George asked Jake.

@”I guess left would be fine.”  Jake replied.  It didn’t really matter to him which way they went.  

Kaley rushed ahead of them, pulling Harry behind her.  George then followed closely, and Jake slowly brought up the rear.  

Jake was quite freaked out as he looked at the stands around him.  He thought for a moment that one shop was selling shrunk heads.  Then, he ran into George’s back, for he had stopped.  

Before the group stood 2 huge men.  Both wore entirely rubber suits and held some kind of large weapon that Jake didn’t recognize.   

“Did you kids forget to read the rules?”  One said with a smirk.  

“Who cares about rules?!”  Kaley said.

“For your information, Miss, this park is all about rules.  It was clearly stated that the left side of the park is off limits!” The man yelled, raising his weapon.  The other raised his as well, and bolts of electricity shot back and forth from them.  

The two guards lowered their weapons towards the group.

#”I guess right would be fine.”  Jake replied.  It didn’t really matter to him which way they went.  

Kaley pulled Harry over to the left, obviously not caring if Jake and George didn’t go with them.  George began walking off the opposite direction.  

Jake stayed behind for a moment.  He watched Kaley and Harry head down the path.  They were stopped short by two huge men in rubber suits.  Jake thought it to be nothing, and ran to catch up with George.  

“There’s just so much to do…I don’t even know where to start!”  George said, eyes gleaming with excitement.  “Hmm…how about that ride?” He pointed over to their left at a large roller coaster.  It had more twists and turns than any other roller coaster Jake had ever seen.  

George stepped into the line for the ride and Jake reluctantly followed.  

“HEY, Jake!”

Jake looked over to see his younger brother, Joey, standing out behind them on the metal walkway.

$”I’ll catch up with you later.”  Jake told George.  George looked disappointed only for a moment as Jake made his way out of the line.  

“What do you want?”  Jake asked Joey, “I thought you didn’t want to come here because was too scary?” He teased.  

“Oh, shut up.” Joey retorted, “I came here with some of my friends and they ditched me.”

Jake rolled his eyes.  

“I wanted to go that way,” Joey pointed to his left, “to check out a game, but everyone else wanted to go the other way.  They said they’d wait, but they didn’t.”  

Jake laughed and asked, “Was that game worth it?”

“No, it was just one of those stupid ones where you throw a baseball at glass bottles.  Those are impossible to win!”  Joey groaned and added, “Plus, the damn ball made my hand smell bad and those weird guard guys keep following me.”  

“Speaking of guards...” Jake said as he saw one come up behind his brother and grab his shoulder.  

“Are you aware that the left side of the park is off limits?”  The guard spat.  

“Yeah, of course.”  Joey lied.  

“Then why does your hand stink?”  The guard questioned, grabbing Joey by the wrist.  

“I don’t know, because your park stinks!”  

The guard, obviously angered, dragged Joey off.  His large hand still grasped the young boy’s wrist as he reached into his pocket with the other hand.  

Jake saw him pull something out.  It looked to be a knife.  

He tried to run and catch up to them, but they were lost in the crowd.  

Before he could even process what had just happened a girl around the same age as him approached.  

“Hey Jake, weird park huh?”  

“Oh, hi Emily.” Jake answered, “Yeah, this guard guy just grabbed my brother and…”

Emily seemed completely uninterested in his story.  Jake was puzzled, but then realized what was distracting her.  A cat sat on the edge of the metal walkway, lazily cleaning itself.  

She began to walk towards it.  

“What are you doing?  That thing probably has rabies.”  It was the ugliest cat Jake had ever seen.  Its fur was matted and stood in many places.  Its whiskers were bent and broken.  Yet Emily, the weird animal lover, still approached it.

%Jake simply ignored his brother and continued waiting in line with George.  It didn’t take long for them to get on the ride, for there weren’t many people in line.  Jake thought nothing of it, and got on the ride next to George.  

It began the same as any roller coaster, going up and down hills that got progressively higher.  After the sped down the highest one, the car went up a loop which put everyone upside down.  

Jake felt the ride slow at the top of the loop.  The rickety contraption that held him and George inside became loose.  He screamed as they plummeted out of the seat.  Jake managed to grab a hold of the track, but lost his grip as he saw George fall all the way to the ground.

&”Really, Emily, this is a weird park.  Just leave it alone.”  Jake said, grabbing her arm in an effort to hold her back.  

She shook free from his grasp, “It’s just a cat, chill!”  Emily crept closer and kneeled down.  A guard came up behind her as she reached her hand out towards the cat.  

Jake was really freaked out at this point.  Everything around here was so strange.  You do one thing wrong and a guard carries you off to who knows where.  He was actually scared enough that he walked towards the exit to the park.  

Suddenly, he heard a scream.  Normally you wouldn’t think much of a scream in a theme park as you walk past a roller coaster, but the person was defiantly screaming ‘help’.  

Jake turned to see what was going on.  He spotted George, hanging on for his life on a section of the track.  He ran off the metal path.  As soon as his foot touched the bare ground, a shock wave went through his whole body.  The next thing he knew, he was lying on the ground.  

A deep voice said, “Silly kid, the rules say not to step off the path.”  Powerful hands lifted him off the ground.  Jake opened his eyes to see George lose his grip and smash into the ground.  Jake cried out, only to feel another wave of electricity go through his body.  He blacked out.  
YOU DIED.  THE END!   (yes, this is the correct ending!!)










*Jake didn’t say another word and let Emily approach the strange cat.  The cat actually stayed still as she stroked it.  Then Jake saw a nearby guard.  His gaze was directly on Emily.  

Jake walked over to her, “Emily…I don’t think you’re supposed to…”

“That’s right you aren’t.” A deep voice boomed from behind him.  

Emily stood up and turned around, “Why?”

“It’s in the rules, don’t touch the animals!” The guard growled, “Apparently you teenagers don’t know how to read!”  He reached into his pocket and pulled out an object.  It appeared to be a tazer.  He pressed the button on the top of it.  

The next thing he knew, Jake was on the ground.  A huge wave of electricity went through him and he blacked out.
